The Penny Shortage
In February 2025, the Trump Administration and the U.S. Treasury announced the ceasing of all future minting of the penny.
On 12/5/2025, the Georgia Department of Revenue released Policy Bulletin SUT 2025-02, following the federal government's decision to end penny production in early 2025.
- On 11/12/25, the striking of the last U.S. penny took place in Philadelphia, ending over 230 years of production.
- Before final production ended, retailers and banks were reporting widespread penny shortages.
- Pennies remain legal tender in the United States.
