ATTENTION RETAILERS & WHOLESALERS!
CHANGES TO GEORGIA FOOD CODE GO INTO EFFECT 3/1/2004

A handout was sent to every retailer discussing the new requirement of a designated "Person in Charge," who will be responsible for demonstrating knowledge on the prevention of foodborne illness.

GFIA highly recommends that every retailer with a deli operation send a Person in Charge to a certified training program. A Person in Charge can be a store manager, deli manager or any employee designated with the responsibility. A person with this role must be present at the store during all hours of operations. (Keep in mind, if the employee leaves your company, the certification goes with the employee.)

University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service offers ServSafe Manager Training in several Georgia counties. Click here to get the current training schedule and contact information. Training session cost is based upon space availability and is generally between $125-$190. (There are a few employee training sessions available, but those do not include the "Person in Charge" certification exam.)

If training is not currently offered in your area, please contact your local county extension office. Click here to find your local field office number.

For retailers in extreme south Georgia, Valdosta Technical College is offering a ServSafe Manager Training May 24th & 25th. Register by phone 229-333-2122 before May 19th. Space is limited, so register early.

For those of you who have multiple stores and are interested in a train-the-trainer program, please contact GFIA to get more information on the SuperSafeMark program offered by FMI or visit www.fmi.org. Their program is retail grocery specific and will provide you with the necessary materials to provide in-house training to your managers and employees.

Upon receiving a food safety certification certificate you may complete a reimbursement form and return it to the Georgia Food Industry Education Foundation, along with a copy of your test scores and the certificate, for a partial reimbursement of $25 per manager training and $100 for train the trainer training. The education foundation has set aside $10,000 to assist GFIA retail members with certification expenses. These funds will be reimbursed on a first come, first serve notice up to $10,000 for the 2004 fiscal year.
